Hutson adds Webb to coaching staff

FRESNO, Calif. – Vonn Webb has been hired as a Fresno State assistant men's basketball coach, head coach Justin Hutson announced on Friday.

"Vonn is a tremendous teacher of basketball and he will really help us on the floor," Hutson said of Webb. "Anybody who has ever met Vonn knows the type of people-person he is, which in our business helps so much in recruiting, community relationships and on campus. His passion and the relationships he has with student-athletes will be a great asset to us. And he loves Fresno and Fresno State. We're excited to have him and welcome him into our Bulldog Basketball family!"

Webb is the second new assistant coach hired this summer on Hutson's staff, which also included the hiring of Nelson Hernande in June.

A heralded and respected coach and recruiter, Webb returns to the Bulldogs for his second tenure – last serving on the Fresno State bench from 2003-05 as an assistant coach.

Webb was an acclaimed coach at Washington Union High School in Fresno, CA, where he served two terms of duty, from 1995-99 and 2000-03, amassing an .850 winning percentage (182-32). During his career he helped to develop some of the top basketball talent coming out of the San Joaquin Valley, including future NBA players Chris Jeffries and DeShawn Stevenson, along with Demetrius Porter, who starred in college as a Bulldog. During Webb's prep coaching tenure, he earned a pair of CIF State Championships, five section championships, seven league championships and two section runners-up.

Webb earned several honors, including California State Coach of the Year in 1996-97 and Fresno Bee Central Section Coach of the Year in 1996, 1998 and 1999.

He also has 15 years of teaching experience including health, physical education, world history, English, literature and multicultural studies.

Webb spent the 1999-00 season as an assistant coach at Wyoming under Coach Steve McClain. That year the Cowboys posted a 19-12 record and reached the semifinals of the Mountain West Tournament.

More recently, Webb was an assistant coach at UC Riverside (2005-11) and co-director of Jalen Green Elite, an AAU program hosted by former San Joaquin Memorial star Jalen Green, who now plays in the NBA for the Houston Rockets.

Webb attended Neosho County Community College in Chanute, Kansas from 1981-83, where he was a two-year letter winner. He went on to Kansas State for a year, then transferred to Western New Mexico, where he earned his degree in 1989. While at WNMU, he played football and basketball, earning all-league honors in football.

Webb is a member of the Black Coaches Association and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Away from the court he participates as a board member for the "Hope for Youth" group homes.
