CLOVIS, Calif. – For the fourth time in the last five years, Fresno State left Saturday's final day of the Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships with another women's javelin title in tow. In her first year with the Bulldogs, transfer Rhiannon Genilla continued the javelin standard that Vanja Spaic had established. Fresno State's four javelin titles is the most in the conference since the Bulldogs joined in 2013.
Genilla's title, the Bulldogs' second of the week helped Fresno State's women earn its most points since 2016 as the team placed fifth with 73. Fifty of the team's points came from its throwers.
The day opened with the 'Dogs getting six points in the discus. Cierra Jackson survived back-to-back sector fouls to start before shooting up to fourth on her third attempt with a toss of 49.64m/162-10. That would be her best of the day and where she would wind up. Joining her in the scoring, finishing eighth was Tahj’nee Thurston who set a personal best of 47.28m/155-1 in her first discus event since the 2019 MW championships.
The 'Dogs then took to the track where the 4x100 relay team picked up bronze with a 46.10, its second-best time of the season. Ceonna Pipion then jumped into the 400 meters where she placed eighth with a time of 55.67. It was her second straight season scoring points at the conference meet.
Daylee Dunn later placed seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with her second PR in as many days, clocking a 1:01.41. The two-sport athlete was the first Bulldog to score in the event since Kyra Johnson in 2016. The 4x400 relay team ended the night by clocking a season-low 3:43.78.
Over on the men's side, Julian Sotelo tied for the team's best finish of the week, placing fifth in the javelin. The senior's best attempt of the afternoon measured 57.91m/190-0, his second-best throw of the season.
On the track, the 4x100 relay team placed fifth with a season-best 43.25. Mohamed Saleh and Nathan Burd later became the first Bulldog pair to score in the 800 meters since 2013. Saleh placed seventh at 1:51.61 while Burd was just behind him at 1:51.71. Like the Bulldogs' opening relay, the 4x400 team closed the night with a season-low, finishing sixth in 3:17.42.
The Bulldog men finished with 21 points, its second most since 2015.
