Ex-Giants Lineman, Super Bowl Champ Mitch Petrus Dead At 32

New York Giants v San Francisco 49ers

Former New York Giants athlete Mitch Petrus, who won a Super Bowl with the team in 2012, has died at age 32.

According to the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, the ex-NFL player passed away of a "heat-related illness" after working at his family's shop on Thursday (July 18). Petrus was said to have made complaints of feeling ill after a day of working outside and in his family's shop in Lonoke County.

Petrus died at 10:45 p.m. after being taken to Baptist Health Medical Center-North Little Rock, said Pulaski County Coroner Gerone Hobbs, who listed Petrus' cause of death as a heat stroke.

Per the outlet, a heat advisory was issued for a large region of Arkansas, including Lonoke, where temperatures reached "low-to-mid 90s," though a heat index predicted would feel hotter than 100 degrees.

A Carlisle High School alum, Petrus, who played positions like tight end, fullback, and linebacker with the Arkansas Razorbacks, was drafted by the Giants in the fifth round in the 2010 NFL Draft. In 2011, he started three games and performed in the Giants' triumph over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 46.

After going on to play for New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans, Petrus officially retired from the league in 2013.

Rest in Peace, Mitch.
