2024 season comes to a close at MW Championship

LAS VEGAS – The Fresno State volleyball team wrapped up the 2024 season after dropping the opening match of the Mountain West Championship to fifth-seeded San Diego State.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Fresno State Bulldogs started with energy, claiming an early lead, highlighted by an ace from Ella Rud. Despite the promising start, the Aztecs responded with a seven-point run. The Bulldogs struggled to regain momentum as attack errors compounded. Notable moments included Addison Haluska's precise kills and a solid block from Kasey Purry and Brooke Cowie, but San Diego State's offense proved too strong as they claimed the set 25-18.

The Bulldogs bounced back with a dominant performance in set two. A block by Haluska and Purry set the tone early in the set, leading to a six-point streak. Brooke Cowie orchestrated the offense with smart sets, enabling Haluska and Rud to find gaps in the Aztecs' defense. A crucial service run by Alivia Schneider pushed Fresno State further ahead. The Bulldogs maintained their lead with effective defense, including digs by Dionii Fraga, culminating in a commanding 25-16 win.

Fresno State began this set with focus, driven by Cowie's clever assists and Rud's offensive consistency. However, San Diego State surged midway through the set, thanks to strong net play by Shea Rubright and Andrea Campos' accurate setting. The Bulldogs' attack efficiency dropped as errors crept in, and a late rally by the Aztecs sealed the set despite Haluska's valiant efforts.

Determined to force a fifth set, Fresno State kept the score tight early on, with Haluska leading the charge offensively. However, San Diego State's defense tightened, and their service game created separation. The Bulldogs struggled to contain the Aztecs' attacks, and a decisive blocking run capped the match at 3-1.

NOTES:

Addison Haluska delivered 22 kills to lead the Bulldogs with a .442 attack percentage.

Brooke Cowie guided the offense with 36 assists and finished her final match as a Bulldog with 11 digs to lock down another double-double.

Ella Rud provided 15 kills and a perfect service percentage in 18 attempts.
