'Dogs shut out in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Fresno State women's soccer team dropped its second straight match in a row, falling 3-0 on Thursday to New Mexico on a blustery night at the UNM Soccer Complex. It was the Bulldogs' fifth defeat in their last six trips to Albuquerque.

Fresno State was outshot 9-5 in the match with the Lobos holding a 4-3 advantage in shots on target.

HOW IT HAPPENED

New Mexico jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. In the fifth minute, Presley Devey received a ball just outside the six-yard box, turned and hit a shot inside the near post.

UNM doubled its advantage just six minutes into the second half. A bouncing ball among a pack in the box dropped to Alysa Whelchel who struck a shot through two defenders.

Fresno State nearly halved the deficit with 25 minutes remaining. Kaelyn Miller cycled a ball back into the box to Haley Espinoza. The senior's attempt on goal got past the Lobo keeper but it was stopped on the line by a UNM defender.

Less than five minutes later, New Mexico tacked on its third goal of the match.

NOTES

Fresno State dropped to 5-7-3 overall, 0-5-2 in Mountain West play.

Fresno State moved to 1-5-1 all-time in Albuquerque.
