Late rally falls short in series finale

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Fresno State baseball team dropped the series finale to the Washington State Cougars in a 4-3 loss on Sunday afternoon in Pullman, Wash.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Starting pitcher Jake Riding held the Cougars scoreless through four innings before Washington State took a one-run lead in the fifth with a solo home run to lead off the inning.

The Cougars extended their lead in the seventh with three runs driven in by a pair of RBI singles.

Rocco Peppi crushed a three-run home run to bring the 'Dogs within one with two outs in the top of the ninth, but the last-minute rally fell short and the Bulldogs lost 4-3 to the Cougars.

NOTES

Before the weekend started, Ben Newton ranked eighth in the nation in doubles with 18. He now sits at 21 on the season.

Rocco Peppi hit his 13th home run of the season to dive in all three of the Bulldogs' runs.

This is the ninth series win for the Bulldogs in 2024.
