FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team dropped a heartbreaker to UNLV in the series opener on Friday night at Margie Wright Diamond, falling to the Rebels 2-1.
Fresno State (28-13, 8-6 MW) was outhit 5-4 in the contest. The four hits came off the bats of four different Bulldogs.
Taylor Gilmore and Serayah Neiss split time in the circle, the duo dished eight strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Kennedy Bunker hit a two-out single to get the offense going. Lauren Almeida followed on base after drawing a walk. Emma Martinez plated the first run of the game with a single, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs held the lead through the next three innings.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Rebels had one runner on base with two outs. Jesse Farrel belted a two-run home run over the left field wall to take a 2-1 lead.
UNLV sent the Fresno State batters down in order in the bottom of the frame. The Bulldogs returned the favor in the top of the seventh to keep it a one-run game.
After the first two batters were retired, Bunker singled to keep the hope of the comeback win alive. The Rebels' pitcher dished a strikeout for the final out to take game one.
