FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team fell to No. 20/24 Cal 4-3 on Wednesday night at Margie Wright Diamond.
The Bulldogs (28-14, 8-5 MW) were outhit by the Golden Bears (30-12, 4-9 PAC12) 11-9. Keahilele Mattson and Sophia Medellin both recorded two hits in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Cal opened the game with a solo shot over the left field wall, taking an early 1-0 lead.
Fresno State responded in the bottom of the frame. Natalie Elias got the offense going with a one-out single to the short stop, Sophia Medellin made it back-to-back base hits for the Bulldogs. Keahilele Mattson cleared the bases with a two-RBI double off the wall. Lauren Almeida kept the offense firing with a RBI-single, giving Fresno State a 3-1 lead. Juliana Wilson drew a walk during the next at-bat, but Cal retired the next two batters to end the inning.
Cal added one run on two hits in the third inning, cutting Fresno State's lead in half. The Golden Bears retook the lead in the sixth inning with a two-run home run.
In the bottom of the sixth, Kennedy Bunker tallied a one-out single and Emma Martinez moved her into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Kealani Nitta walked during the next at-bat, putting two on with two out. Cal's defense retired the next batter to strand the runners.
The Bulldogs stranded two Golden Bears runners in the top of the seventh to keep it a one-run game. Cal retired the Fresno State batters in order to secure the win, 4-3.
