'Dogs win big in GCC opener

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 6 Fresno State water polo team opened up Golden Coast Conference play with a dominant 20-4 win over Cal Baptist on Saturday afternoon at the Aquatics Center.

Hailey Andress had the headline of the afternoon, scoring four goals in the contest to make it 100 in her career as a Bulldog. Andress became the fifth Bulldog in program history to score 100 goals in their career, and she did so in only 45 games played.

Brooke Ochoa led the 'Dogs in scoring with five goals on five shots. Her five goals are a new season-high.

All three active keepers saw action in the cage on Saturday as Paula Nieto Jasny got the start and played the entire first half with five saves. Ida Tully-Giles played the third quarter with two saves and Kelly Villanueva added one save in the fourth.

How it Happened

Fresno State scored five goals before CBU found the back of the net. Ochoa had three goals in that span, and the Bulldogs saw additional scores from Andress and Kira Anderson. CBU scored with 1:36 remaining in the first quarter. The Bulldogs tacked on two more, courtesy of Ashley Williams and Kaitlin Howarth to take a 7-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Bulldogs held the Lancers scoreless in the second quarter, but added five goals of their own to extend the lead. Williams, Susanna Martinez, Andress and Ochoa (two) were responsible for extending the lead. The Bulldogs had a 12-1 lead at halftime.

Robyn Greenslade got in on the scoring with Fresno State's first possession of the third quarter. CBU countered with their second goal of the game at the 7:16 mark. Abbey Simshauser scored on a powerplay opportunity to answer. Aryanah Telez scored her first goal of the season, in response to a CBU goal. Telez would put the 'Dogs up 15-3 with 4:25 remaining in the third quarter.

Andress' 100th goal came by a laser from the far side of the pool at the 3:52 mark of the third quarter. Andress scored again with 49 seconds left in the quarter Fresno State had a demanding 17-3 lead heading into the fourth.

Ella Simone and Sidney Strickland got on the board in the fourth quarter. CBU scored its final goal of the game with 2:30 left in the game and Telez would wrap up scoring with her second at the 2:07 mark.

Fresno State extends its home winning streak to 13 consecutive games.

Fresno State extended its regular season conference game winning streak to 18 games.

Fresno State won its conference opener for the fifth-straight season.

Fresno State scored 20 goals for the third time this season. It was also the third time ever that the Bulldogs scored at least 20 goals in a GCC game.

Fresno State has held an opponent to five or fewer goals six times this season.

The 16-goal margin of victory is the largest-ever for the Bulldogs in GCC play.
