'Dogs drop weekend matches to Cougars and Zags

SPOKANE, Wash.- Fresno State women's tennis team drops both of its weekend matches against Washington State and Gonzaga at the Stevens Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Match 1: Washington State

Fresno State opened up the weekend with a neutral match up with the Cougars on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars took the doubles point with ease, leading in all three pairs. Bulldogs pair Eliza Dunbar and Carolina Piferi see their first loss of the season at No. 2 doubles against WSU's Nakagawa/ Kumhom.

Cougars take the first two singles points with Kumhom defeating Mariya Vyshkina (6-3, 6-1) and Abouelsaad defeating Charlotte Gisclon (6-4, 6-3). At court No. 6, Hannah Pieper gives the Bulldogs their first points of the match winning the second set, 6-2, taking Markov to a third and winning all six games (4-6, 6-2, 6-0). Carolina Piferi followed strong in suit earning Fresno State's second point after winning the second and third set at No. 2 singles, 0-6, 6-4, 6-0. Washington State took the final two points to defeat Fresno State, 5-2.

Match 2: Gonzaga

Fresno State saw another double point slip through as the Zags grabbed the first point of the match. For the first time this season, Dunbar and Piferi saw back-to-back losses as a doubles pair at No. 2.

Gonzaga won the first singles match with Robertson defeating Carolina Piferi at No. 2 (6-2, 6-3.) This is Piferi's first loss at No. 2 singles and second loss this season after earning herself a nine game win streak in singles play. Charlotte Gisclon first on the board for the 'Dogs, defeats Wernli (6-4, 6-0) at No. 5 singles. Hannah Pieper ties up the match after defeating Bittner (6-0, 6-3) at No. 6 singles. Zags closed the match earning the next two points and leaving No. 2 Oda and Matilde Magrini's match unfinished in the third set, (7-6 (7-5), 5-7, unfinished).

UP NEXT: Fresno State continues their time on the road with two more non-conference matches between University of San Francisco on Mar. 7 and Weber State on Mar. 10 before conference play begins.
