‘Dogs record fourth shutout, run-rule Hawai’i

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team has a hot start to the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, defeating Hawai'i 9-0 in five innings, Friday morning at Big League Dreams Complex.

The Bulldogs (8-4) posted 12 hits while limiting the Rainbow Wahine (1-6) to only four hits in the contest. Fresno State had four players record multiple hits. Senior Sophia Medellin had a career-high five RBIs off two hits including a three-run home run.

Senior right-handed pitcher Taylor Gilmore recorded the start. She pitched 4.0 innings for her sixth win of the season. Sophomore lefty Serayah Neiss finished the game for Fresno State, chalking the fourth shutout of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Keahilele Mattson got the offense going with a one-out solo homer over the center-field wall. Two runners would get on base with a hit-by-pitch and a single. With two on and two outs, Kennedy Bunker and Emma Martinez fired off back-to-back hits, bringing in two runs for a 3-0 lead after one inning.

Fresno State tacked on three more runs in the next inning. Mattson had another one-out hit, putting the offense back on the attack. Juliana Wilson drew a walk, and Medellin followed with a home run to bring in three runs.

After a scoreless third inning, the 'Dogs put up another three runs over the next two innings to take a 9-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning. Neiss and the defense finished off Hawaii in the bottom of the frame for the third run-rule victory of the season.
