'Dogs cash out with season sweep over UNLV

LAS VEGAS – The Fresno State volleyball team is leaving Vegas with another win on the books after defeating UNLV 3-1 at Cox Pavilion on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bulldogs battled through the opening set with nine tie scores and only two lead changes. Fresno State briefly fell behind by two points in the first set, but after tying the match at 11-11, the Bulldogs stayed on top for the remainder of the match opener before winning 25-21.

UNLV had a strong start to the second set, taking an 11-5 lead. Fresno State rallied and scored five straight to elevate the score to 11-10. The scoring stayed tight knit between the Rebels and 'Dogs, but Fresno State took the reins after tying it up at 17. With five kills added to close the set, Fresno State took a 2-0 lead with a set victory of 25-21.

Set three started in a similar fashion as the previous pair, but in favor of the Rebels. UNLV put up 14 kills in comparison to Fresno State's 11 and won the set 25-18.

The 'Dogs and the Rebs kept the Cox Pavilion rocking through the final set, with a total of 16 tie scores and nine lead changes. Fresno State outhit UNLV .227 to .163, and broke out of the back-and-fourth scoring routine late in the match to defeat the Rebels 25-22 in the fourth set and 3-1 overall.

NOTES

Fresno State has now doubled its win total from 2022 with 14 on the year and five games left in the regular season for the Bulldogs.

Brooke Cowie and Ella Rud both earned double-doubles in this match with Cowie totaling 44 assists and 11 digs, in addition to Rud's 14 kills and 13 digs. This is the sixth match this season to include double-doubles from both Rud and Cowie.

This season, Fresno State snapped an eight-game losing streak against UNLV and completed the first season sweep over the Rebels since 2018.
