Hutton takes bronze in heptathlon

CLOVIS, Calif. – Like she did during the indoor season, Fresno State's Madison Hutton added another bronze medal to her collection on Friday at Veterans Memorial Stadium, placing third in the heptathlon at the 2023 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The sophomore finished with a career-best 5,387 points to move to third all-time in the heptathlon at Fresno State.

While Hutton recorded a personal best, she wasn't the only one as both of her multis teammates, Kaja Bins and Kaitlynn Perez, did so as well. Bins finished fifth with 5,138 points. Perez was 10th with 4,762 points.

Hutton's medal quest began on Thursday as she set new PBs in all four events, recording a time of 14.00 in the 100-meter hurdles, 1.67m/5-5.75 in the high jump, 11.90m/39-0.5 in the shot put and a 25.77 in the 200 meters. The Surry, England product narrowly moved into second following Friday's long jump after a 5.93m/19-5.5 but slipped back into third following the javelin.

Two hours later, Garrett Ostrinski narrowly missed a new lifetime best as the junior gutted his way through 10 events in two days in the decathlon. He finished with 6,762 points. Ostrinski set new personal bests in the 100 meters (11.44), 400 meters (50.58) and pole vault (3.95m/12-11.5).

Within an hour of completing his fifth event of the day, Ostrinski was competing in the high jump. The junior placed seventh clearing 1.93m/6-4 on his second attempt.

Over in the long jump, Bronson Ortlieb recorded a lifetime best on his first attempt of his first Mountain West championship meet. The freshman hit a mark of 7.12m/23-4.5 which held up for sixth through the final five rounds.

The women's shot put group then earned a combined 11 points. Cierra Jackson placed fourth but landed a PB of 16.39m/53-9.25 on her fifth attempt as she inches closer to Dot Jones' program record. Seventh going into her final throw, Jordyn Bryant uncorked a lifetime best of 15.77m/51-9 to move up to fifth.

Like she did yesterday in the discus, Jocelyn Budwig recorded her best mark of the day on her third attempt. She landed a season-best toss of 15.45m/50-8.25 to move from 10th to sixth on the program's all-time list, just behind Bryant.

Two Bulldogs qualified for Saturday's 400-meter final, claiming two of the final six spots. Ceonna Pipion clocked the fourth-fastest time of the day at 54.35. Iyanna Ross was eighth at 55.31.

Pipion will compete in both the 200 and 400 finals on Saturday.

The evening closed with Rachela Pace going through flight one of the long jump to secure a spot in the finals. One of the top triple jumpers in program history, the Maltese athlete posted a 27-centimeter PB on her second attempt of the competition as she notched a mark of 5.93m/19-5.5. After flight two, she went into the finals seeded fourth. The sophomore remained there through the fourth and fifth rounds but she was passed twice just before taking her final attempt. Pace moved back up to fifth on her final jump, improving to 5.97m/19-7.

Fresno State will close out the championship meet tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. PT with the women's discus.
