'Dogs snag sixth series win with defeat over Aztecs

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State baseball team snagged another conference series win by defeating the San Diego State Aztecs 5-4 on Sunday at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.

The 'Dogs advance to 17-17 on the season (9-8 Mountain West) and the Aztecs sit at 13-19 (8-5 MW).

NOTES:

This is the sixth series win for the 'Dogs this season.

Tommy Hopfe crushed a two-run bomb, his fifth home run of the season, before taking the mound to earn his seventh save of the year.

Victor Arreola earned his second win of 2023.

Tyler Davis went 2-3 at the plate with a run scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Aztecs scored the game's first run with a sacrifice fly that dished one run. Fresno State retaliated with two runs granted by an RBI single from Nikoh Mitchell in the bottom of the third.

An Aztec homer in the top of the fourth made it a 3-2 game in favor of SDSU until Tommy Hopfe launched his fifth home run of the season that scored Murf Gray.

SDSU tied it up in the top of the seventh with a solo shot to left field. Travis Welker hit a sacrifice fly to plate the go-ahead run and the 'Dogs defeated the Aztecs 5-4.
