EL MACERO, Calif. – 67. Matthew Sutherland and Matthew Manganello soared up the leaderboard on Saturday at the El Macero Classic as each of the Fresno State juniors posted a 5-under par 67. Sutherland is one-shot off the lead at 8 under while Manganello is three shots back of the leader at 6 under.
Both Manganello and Sutherland put together rounds with six birdies and a single bogey. Sutherland had 16 bogey-free holes before No. 17 but rebounded with a birdie on 18 to move back into a tie for second. Manganello turned in a bogey-free 4-under par back nine to make his move. Like they did yesterday, both 'Dogs closed their rounds with birdies on 18.
The Bulldog duo account for two of the seven scores of 67 or lower this week at the tournament. Both have feasted on the Par 5's, shooting a combined 13-under par with Sutherland tied for a tournament-best 7 under on them.
Carding a 285, five shots better than yesterday's opening round, Fresno State moved up two spots to eighth on the leaderboard at 3-under par. The 'Dogs are six shots behind leader San Francisco. The Bulldogs' 4 under on Saturday was the third-lowest team score of the day.
Fresno State will begin teeing off the final round at 8:30 a.m. PT tomorrow.
