'Dogs win series with 2-0 victory over Nevada

FRESNO, Calif. - In a game that took under two hours, the Diamond 'Dogs took the series finale, 2-0 over Nevada on Sunday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.

Fresno State (8-6, 2-3 MW) was held to five hits in the contest, but scored a pair of timely runs to win the rubber match over the Wolf Pack.

Nikoh Mitchell led the 'Dogs with a pair of hits, scored a run and tossed two innings on the mound striking out a pair.

Bobby Blandford smacked his first home run of the season and Ben Newton and Travis Welker added singles.

On the pitching side, Roman Angelo, Zach Statzer, Mitchell and Tommy Hopfe combined for the three-hit shutout limiting Nevada to all singles and struck out a combined nine with Angelo matching his Fresno State career high with seven strikeouts.

How It Happened

The 'Dogs got the scoring started in the fourth inning with an RBI groundout by Sammy Augustine that drove home Mitchell for a 1-0 lead.

The Wolf Pack threatened to tie the game in the sixth putting a pair of runners on base with two walks and two outs. With Angelo exiting the game, Statzer came in and on the first pitch got the Wolf Pack's Henry Strmecki to foul out to Tyler Davis behind the plate.

A one-out solo home run by Blandford to right field in the seventh pushed the 'Dogs lead to 2-0 with Mitchell working a spotless eighth and Hopfe converting his fourth save of the season with a three up, three down ninth.
