'Dogs finish Lynn R. Miller Classic

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Fresno State softball team went 1-1 on the final day of the Lynn R. Miller Classic on Sunday. The Bulldogs fell 8-1 in the first game against UC Riverside before defeating the Highlanders 4-0 in the second game.

Junior Keahilele Mattson had a big weekend at the plate for the Bulldogs going 8-for-10. She had two home runs, six RBIs and drew eight walks.

In the circle, Senior Shelbi Denman finished the weekend with a 2-0 record with six strikeouts.

GAME 1

UCR plated eight runs through four innings. Fresno State's sole run came off the bat of Bailey Williams, blasting a home run over the center field wall.

GAME 2

Fresno State found its offensive rhythm in game two.

The game was scoreless through the first two innings. In the third inning with the bass loaded, Bailey Williams drove a two-RBI single down the left-field line.

The Bulldogs extended their lead in the fifth inning. Abby Doughty got the offense started with a leadoff triple. Mattson drew a walk to put two runners on base. Williams earned her third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Fresno State tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning with a two-out rally. Mattson got on base after drawing her third walk of the game. Williams made it back-to-back walks to bring up Bella Rocco with two on and two outs. Rocco delivered with a single up the middle to score the final run of the inning.

Freshman Serayah Neiss took over the circle in the final inning, closing out the win with three strikeouts.

The Bulldogs will host the Fresno State Kickoff Classic Feb. 16-19 in Margie Wright Diamond.
